How long does a bankruptcy case take?

Chapter 7:
You can usually discharge your debts in about three months in a Chapter 7 case. However, complications in your case could extend the time.

Chapter 13:
Chapter 13 takes more time. You'll receive your discharge after a period of three to five years, assuming that you've made all your payments to the Trustee.

In a Chapter 13 case, you'll have a meeting with your creditors (usually a meeting with your bankruptcy trustee) and then your creditors will have time to object to your debt reorganization plan. Following the objection period, if your plan is approved, the court will confirm your plan. This will usually take about the same time as a Chapter7 discharge
